Planting the Demonstration Flowerbed

Who Are Our Volunteers?

ENG was started by volunteers and continues to be driven by them. Our volunteers come from a range of backgrounds but they all share some of these interests:

  • Want to support the local natural environment
  • Enjoy native wildflowers
  • Want to use native wildflowers and grasses in their own yard
  • Want to learn more about native plants
  • Like to be outdoors
  • Like getting their hands dirty
  • Like to have fun.

If one or all of these points applies to you, you might be an ENG volunteer.

What are the Benefits of Volunteering?

Every volunteer finds different benefits for volunteering based on their own interests. Some common benefits are:

  • Gain and share knowledge of native plants
  • Receive native wildflowers and grasses to grow at home
  • Find new friends
  • Contribute to a more beautiful and more natural Edmonton
  • We can also arrange for volunteers to receive certificates and/or reference letters for completion or work on special projects

What Training do I get as a Volunteer?

Training is done on an individual basis. A new volunteer will go out to a site with current volunteers. They'll get a tour of the site, be introduced to the different plants, and be told about the job.

For volunteer jobs that aren't related to planting, training will be done as required by the position.

What Can I Do As A Volunteer?

Generally our volunteers work on different projects around Edmonton. Check out our projects section to get a better idea of what the options are. We also have volunteer positions that help ENG through administration, outreach, or management. However, if you have another interest please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss it.

How much time do I need to put in?

That's up to you. You are welcome to contribute as much, or as little time as you have. Some positions are more formal in their time requirements, this will be detailed in the posting.

Do I need to know about the plants and gardening already?

No. We want volunteers of all different backgrounds, knowledge, and experience.
